Fifty More Workers and Students Arrested Stop the Suppression on Jasic Workers Now
Although the workers’ struggle to form a trade union in the Shenzhen Jasic Technology Co. Ltd. has persisted for more than one month, there are still no signs of resolving. In the small hours of August 24, the police deployed a number of riot police to raid the residence of the Jasic Workers Solidarity Support Group in Huizhou, forcibly arrested more than 50 workers and students. Including those who had been arrested prior to the raid, more than 70 workers and students have been arrested so far.
Recently, the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions has launched a global appeal to call on unions and labour groups around the world to write to the Premier of the State Council, Li Keqiang, and the Chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, Wang Dongming, demanding the immediate release of the Jasic workers and their supporters who were arrested for organizing their own trade union and to drop all criminal charges against them. At the same time, the appeal also demands the Chinese Government and the ACFTU to observe and implement the ILO's nasicprinciples in the rights to freedom of association, and hence, to ensure and assist the Jasic workers to organize their trade unions. The appeal has so far received support from labour groups, trade unions, and international labour organizations from more than a dozen countries, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC-UK), General Confederation of Labour (CGT), the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (Swedish-LO). Regrettably, the Chinese government has chosen to ignore the appeal from the international community and continue to violate international labour standards by deliberately deprive the workers’ of their rights to organize trade unions and suppress workers' actions to defend their rights. The HKCTU expressed extreme resentment and regret.
Therefore, the HKCTU demands:
1. The Chinese Government to immediately release the workers and supporters of the Jasic Workers Struggle and drop all charges against them;
2. The ACFTU to immediately stop all efforts to suppress workers’ right to freedom of association and assist the workers to form their trade union;
3. The Jasic management to reinstate all the dismissed workers and recognize the labourorganization formed by the workers.
