Global Union Condemns Political Suppression in Hong Kong

From 29/8 to 1/9, more than 600 union representatives gathered in Geneva for the 27th World Congress of the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations (IUF), a global union representing more than 2.5 million members from around the world.  In this year's congress, an urgent resolution was passed in condemning the political prosecution of the Umbrella Movement participants in Hong Kong, namely Joshua Wong, Alex Chow, and Oscar Law, and stresses that such prosecution is a threat to the entire civil society, including the independent union movement, that fights for democracy.

While delivering their speech, representatives from Hong Kong and HKCTU upheld their yellow umbrella and proclaimed: "Despite we are living under the shadow of the Chinese Communist Party, we never give up!"  Meanwhile, they also called for the international unions to closely follow the political suppression in Hong Kong.
