Hunan workers suffering from silicosis returning Shenzhen to show determination to seek justice with ropes
November 2018, Hunan workers suffering from silicosis travelled to Shenzhen to seek better rights. Representative from the relevant department pledged to come up with a new compensation scheme within one month. Worker representatives from Leiyang City and Sangzhi County then negotiated with Shenzhen Government representatives in early December and obtained positive results. The negotiation results were, however, overturned by Hunan People’s Government when it discussed the implementation details with the workers who returned to the province.
Hunan Silicosis Workers' 9-Year Pledge for Justice Families' Protests in Shenzhen Met with Police Brutality
On 6 November 2018, over 100 silicosis victims and their family members from Hunan Province protested at the Shenzhen Social Security Bureau in Shenzhen Human Resource Park. They hoped the Shenzhen Government to assist them in settling the compensation issue but the authority refused their demands and triggered more victims and their families joining the protest. This pledge for justice has been going on for 9 years and the end is still yet to be seen.
Silicosis Victims Refused the So-called Compensation & Faced Crackdown
On 6 November 2018, over 100 silicosis victims and their family members protested at the Shenzhen Social Security Bureau in Shenzhen Human Resource Park. The protestors came originally from Hunan Province, worked as pneumatic drillers and contracted the occupational illness in Shenzhen. Therefore, they hoped the Shenzhen Government to assist them in settling the compensation issue. The authority refused their demands and triggered more victims and their families joining the protest.
Silicosis Workers from Hunan Province Fought for Their Rights in Shenzhen and Were Assaulted by Police
On 7 November 2018, over 300 Silicosis victims and their family members from Hunan Province staged a march and sit-in protest in front of Shenzhen City Government, demanding the government to help them with medical expenses and compensation issues, as they contracted the occupational disease in Shenzhen. In the same evening, police assaulted the workers to disperse them, causing many incidents of injuries and hospitalization.
