In response to the Jasic workers' struggle for their right to unionization over July and August last year, the Shenzhen police conducted a large-scale crackdown with workers and their supporters seized. Many of them are yet to be released. Thereafter, police have made several more rounds of raids with even more arrests and detention. As of today, 38 people have been held under detention of various forms, including the infamous "residential surveillance in designated residence".

All China Federation of Trade Unions (hereafter: ACFTU) is the only legal and recognized trade union organization in the mainland China, as China’s Trade Union Law restricts workers to organize independently. Very often when workers seek help from the ACFTU, its unsympathetic attitude turns workers down and they would then take collective action to resolve the problem. A recent labour action in Panyu Tongrong Electronic Co. Ltd. illustrates such a phenomenon perfectly.
ACFTU sold Jasic workers and failed its pledge to reform
Labour disputes at Shenzhen Jasic caused by workers’ initiative to form their own union have being going on for more than a month, while supports from mainland China and overseas continued. The Jasic workers have been fighting for months, just for forming a union of their own choosing within the existing legal framework. However, workers’ right to organize was given away again, when the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU, the only legal union in mainland China) joined hands with the Jasic management to suppress workers’ actions. The ACFTU and the Jasic have us
